ILLEGAL ALIEN FROM MEXICO FEDERALLY CHARGED WITH IDENTITY THEFT

Dennis C. Pfannenschmidt, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, announced today that John Doe, a/k/a “Juan Castro”, age unknown, of Mexico, was indicted on false claim to United States citizenship and aggravated identity theft charges.

According to U.S. Attorney Pfannenschmidt, in June 2009, John Doe, a/k/a “Juan Castro” was arrested by Eastern Adams Regional Police Department for driving offenses. At that time, he allegedly told police that he was a United States citizen, born in California. During further interviews by Immigration and Custom Enforcement Detention and Removal Agents with the assistance of a Spanish speaking Adams County Detention Center officer, Doe admitted that he was not a citizen of the United States. A search of Pennsylvania state records revealed that John Doe allegedly obtained a Pennsylvania driver’s license and
had been using the identity he had stolen to obtain various forms of identification.

If convicted of all the charges, John Doe faces life imprisonment and fines of up to $750,000.

This case is being investigated by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement; Eastern Adams County Police Department and the Adams County Detention Center and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daryl F. Bloom.

An Indictment or Information is not evidence of guilt but simply a description of the charge made
by the Grand Jury and/or United States Attorney against a defendant. A charged Defendant is
presumed innocent until a jury returns a unanimous finding that the United States has proven the
defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt or until the defendant has pled guilty to the
charges.
