NANTICOKE UNI-MART ROBBER SENTENCED TO 87 MONTHS IN PRISON

Martin C. Carlson, Acting United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, announced that a Kingston man was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Court Judge William J. Nealon to serve 87 months in federal prison for committing an armed robbery of a Uni-Mart store in Nanticoke on May 10, 2007.

Carlson stated that Michael Johnson, age 28, formerly a resident of Philadelphia, previously pleaded guilty to interfering with commerce by robbery and possessing a firearm while committing a crime of violence.

Johnson was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 21, 2007, as a result of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Nanticoke Police Department.

Judge Nealon also ordered Johnson to be placed on three years of supervised release after serving his prison sentence. Johnson must also pay a $200 special assessment, and pay restitution in the amount of $136.

Carlson noted that the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa.
