WOMAN SENTENCED TO A YEAR IN PRISON FOR AIDING DRUG DEALER

Martin C. Carlson, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, announced that a New Jersey woman was sentenced today by U.S. District Court Judge A. Richard Caputo to serve one year in federal prison for cocaine and crack cocaine trafficking during 2007.

Carlson stated that Virginia Summers, age 27, was sentenced after she pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute more than five grams of crack cocaine and cocaine. Summers admitted to assisting Mark Cook in his drug trafficking business in Lackawanna County. Judge Caputo recently sentenced Cook to more than six years in prison for his role in the drug conspiracy.

Summers was charged as a result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local police in Monroe and Lackawanna Counties.

Judge Caputo also ordered Summers to be placed on three years of supervised release after serving her federal prison sentence. Summers must also pay a $100 special assessment.

Carlson noted that the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa.
