FORMER TAYLOR DPW DIRECTOR SENTENCED TO 18 MONTHS IN PRISON

Martin C. Carlson, Acting United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, announced that the former Director of Taylor Borough’s Department of Public Works was sentenced today by U.S. District Court Judge William J. Nealon to serve 18 months in federal prison for taking kickbacks for awarding borough contracts.

Carlson stated that Robert Sweet, age 64, pleaded guilty on July 11, 2007, to interference with commerce by extortion under color of official right. Sweet admitted to taking kickbacks from the awarding of borough contacts during 2001-2006. Sweet also admitted paying contractors and taking kickbacks for work that was never performed.

Sweet was charged as a result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Judge Nealon also ordered Sweet to be placed on three years of supervised release after serving his prison sentence. Sweet must also pay a $100 special assessment and restitution to Taylor Borough.

Carlson noted that the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa.
