Robert S. Cessar

Robert S. Cessar assumed the duties of United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, November 17, 2009.
Headquartered in Pittsburgh, the Western District of Pennsylvania is one of three federal districts in Pennsylvania, extending from the New York border to the north, the West Virginia border to the south and covering the 25 counties in the westernmost portion of the Commonwealth. Mr. Cessar supervises the office's 54 attorneys, including those in the district's branch offices in Erie and Johnstown. The United States Attorney's Office prosecutes individuals for various federal crimes and litigates civil defensive and affirmative cases on behalf of the United States.
Mr. Cessar is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Dickinson College, and a graduate of the Notre Dame Law School. After law school, he was employed as an attorney for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Washington, D.C. In 1990, he joined the Office of the United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and was assigned as an Assistant U.S. Attorney to the White Collar Crimes Unit. During that time, he prosecuted many significant bank fraud and public corruption cases. In January of 2002, he was appointed the First Assistant United States Attorney.
