Remarks of the Honorable David J. Hickton
United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania
At Candlelight Vigil
Following the Sikh Temple Milwaukee Shooting
Today we gather together to pray for the victims of the senseless violence in Wisconsin, and to stand together against ignorance, hatred and violence.
I am grateful for the opportunity to be with you in my official capacity as United States Attorney and as your friend.
I am moved always by the peaceful and loving traditions of the Sikh community where equality and dignity are first principles. I was proud of the response of the Sikh community to the hatred and violence. This inspired people of all faiths and those of no faith.
When confronted with ignorance and hatred, Sikhs responded with patience and peace. You have reminded the world that the light of faith and love always triumphs over the darkness of evil.
We are resolved to fight acts of terror and hatred.
I believe an attack on our civil rights is an attack against all of us and an attack on our Nation and its principles.
Such attacks are unacceptable and will not be tolerated; you can be assured that the President, the Attorney General and the entire Department of Justice are resolved to do everything to protect our liberty and our freedoms so we can live without fear.
Tonight, let us pray together for the victims in Wisconsin; pray for our Country and resolve to work together to ensure freedom and justice for all.
Protect yourself from fraud, and report suspected cases of financial fraud to local law enforcement.
