Bennettsville Inmate Pleads Guilty to Escape Charge

Columbia, South Carolina ---- United States Attorney Bill Nettles stated today that Dawud Abdullah Khalid, age 38, has entered a guilty plea in federal court in Florence, SC, to escape, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 750(a). United States District Judge Terry L. Wooten of Florence accepted the plea and will impose sentence after he has reviewed the presentence report which will be prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.

Evidence presented at the change of plea hearing established that Khalid was serving a federal sentence for conspiracy to distribute cocaine and crack cocaine. Khalid escaped from custody from the Federal Correctional Institution in Bennettsville, South Carolina, on July 17, 2012. Khalid was captured a short time later the same day when he was found hiding in woods near the prison.

Mr. Nettles stated the maximum penalty Khalid can receive is a fine of $250,000.00 and/or imprisonment for 5 years, plus a special assessment of $100.00.

The case was investigated by agents of the United States Marshals Service. Assistant United States Attorney William E. Day, II of the Florence office handled the case.
