Columbia, South Carolina -----United States Attorney Bill Nettles stated today that Mark Alexander Kraft, age 55, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, pled guilty in federal court in Columbia, South Carolina, to Theft of Government Funds, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 641. Senior United States District Judge Margaret B. Seymour accepted the plea and sentenced Kraft to five years probation and ordered forfeiture in the amount of $69,822.45.

Evidence presented at the change of plea hearing established that Mr. Kraft, while working as a radiological inspector on the Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina, submitted false and fraudulent documents to the Department of Energy claiming that he was qualified to receive per diem payments, when in fact, he was not entitled to such benefits.

The case was investigated by agents of the Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Energy. Assistant United States Attorney Jamie Lea Nabors Schoen of the Columbia office handled the case.
