Wounded Knee Woman Charged with Assault

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Wounded Knee, South Dakota, woman has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. Anna Mae Rowland, age 21, was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 24, 2008, for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. She appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on October 8, 2009, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both; 3 years of supervised release; and a $100 Special Assessment. Restitution may also be ordered. The charge is merely an accusation, and Rowland is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Rosebud Law Enforcement Services. Assistant United States Attorney Eric Kelderman is prosecuting the case. On November 5, 2009, Rowland was released on bond pending trial. Trial is set for December 15, 2009. # # #
