Man from Mexico Guilty of Living Illegally in United States

October 27, 2009
Rapid City, SD

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Gilberto Ramirez-Cortez, age 34, appeared before Chief US District Judge Karen E. Schreier on October 27, 2009, and pled guilty to an Information that charged him with Illegal Entry After Deportation. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 2 years imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine. On August 30, 2009, Ramirez-Cortez, after having previously been deported to Mexico, was found to be living in Rapid City. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Rapid City Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Mark A. Vargo. A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for November 30, 2009. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the US Marshal pending sentencing. # # #
