Eagle Butte Man Indicted for Assaulting a Federal Officer, Child Abuse, and Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol With a Minor Present

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that an Eagle Butte man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Assaulting a Federal Officer, Child Abuse, and Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol With a Minor Present.


Tyler J. Peterson, age 30, was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 13, 2010. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on December 22, 2010, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 20 years' imprisonment. The charges are merely accusations, and Peterson is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.


The investigation is being conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers is prosecuting the case. Peterson was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date has not yet been set.
