Pine Ridge Man Arraigned on Assault Charges

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.
Thomas Wasicu Hehaka Janis, age 25, was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 17, 2010, for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on December 17, 2010, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years of imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. The charge is merely an accusation, and Janis is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins is prosecuting the case. Janis was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not yet been set.
