United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Rapid City man charged with Use and Carrying of a Firearm During a Drug Trafficking Crime was sentenced on December 29, 2010, by US District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken. Lala Briggs, age 32, was sentenced to 60 months of imprisonment, five years of supervised release, and a $100 victim assessment.

Briggs was indicted by a federal grand jury on January 20, 2010. In December 2009, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Briggs' home. At the time, Briggs was in possession of marijuana and intended to distribute it near Rapid City. He also illegally possessed a .22 caliber pistol and a 9mm x 19 caliber rifle, which were possessed to protect against the theft of his marijuana and drug proceeds. He pled guilty to the charge on August 31, 2010.

This case was investigated by the ATF, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team. Assistant US Attorney Mark A. Vargo prosecuted the case.

Briggs was immediately turned over to the custody of the US Marshal.
