Pine Ridge Man Indicted for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Pine Ridge man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for assaulting a female at Kyle on April 2, 2010, with the assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

Keith Returns, age 19, was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 19, 2011, for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. He appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on July 26, 2011, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years' imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine. The charge is merely an accusation, and Returns is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Returns was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal. A trial date has not yet been set.
