North Carolina Man Sentenced for Failure to Pay Legal Child Support

US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Troutman, North Carolina, man charged with Failure to Pay Legal Child Support was sentenced on November 21, 2011, by US District Judge Charles B. Kornmann. Robert E. Piorkowski, age 43, was sentenced to 5 years of unsupervised supervision, a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $21,617.95.

Piorkowski was indicted for failing to pay over $16,000 in past due child support by a federal grand jury on February 8, 2011. He was ordered by the Third Judicial Circuit Court, Codington County, South Dakota, to pay $261 per month for his minor children, commencing October 1, 2000. Said support was subsequently modified to $500 per month commencing on June 1, 2004. At the time of indictment, Piorkowski had not made a child support payment since December 2008, and his total arrearage amount was $16,617.95. He pled guilty to the charge on November 21, 2011.

This case was investigated the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Assistant US Attorney Thomas J. Wright prosecuted the case.
