U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that an Eagle Butte man charged with Assault By Striking, Beating and Wounding and Simple Assault was sentenced on November 28, 2012, by U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno. Carlin J. Jewett, Jr., age 32, was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment and a $20 special assessment.

Jewett was indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2012. He pled guilty to a Superseding Indictment prior to sentencing on November 28. The conviction stems from an incident in September when Jewett was driving while intoxicated in Eagle Butte. He struck the victim with his vehicle, causing her to be pushed underneath the vehicle, run over, and then dragged for a short distance. As a result of the assault, the victim sustained physical injuries requiring medical intervention.

This case was investigated by Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich prosecuted the case.

Jewett was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal.
