Bullhead Woman Arraigned on Assault and Child Abuse Charges

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Bullhead woman has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and Child Abuse.

Velnita Hairy Chin, age 40, was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 11, 2012. She appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge William Gerdes on December 12, 2012, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction of the assault charge is 10 years' minimum mandatory sentence up to life imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both. The maximum penalty upon conviction of the child abuse charge is 15 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both. The charges are merely accusations, and Hairy Chin is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Morley is prosecuting the case.

Hairy Chin was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date has not yet been set.
