Pine Ridge Couple Indicted for Death of Infant Son

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Pine Ridge couple have been indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with the death of their five-week old son.

Abraham Red Cloud, age 30, and Whitnee Eagle, age 24, were indicted on July 24, 2012, for Child Abuse & Neglect and Involuntary Manslaughter. They appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on July 27, 2012, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a mandatory minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 15 years of imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine. The charges are merely accusations, and Red Cloud and Eagle are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman is prosecuting the case. Red Cloud and Eagle were remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date has not yet been set.
