United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Rapid City man and woman were indicted by a federal grand jury for illegally being in possession of a stolen firearm.

Sheldon LaPointe, age 37, and Larena Pipe On Head, age 27, were indicted on November 19, 2012, for Possession of Stolen Firearm and Possession of Firearm with Obliterated Serial Number. They appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on December 6, 2012, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years' imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine. The charges are merely accusations, and LaPointe and Pipe On Head are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman is prosecuting the case. LaPointe and Pipe On Head were remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal. A trial date has not yet been set.
