Legal Intern Program
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Tennessee offers rising second year and third year law students the opportunity to assist in the prosecution and defense of both criminal and civil cases in the United States District Court and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Legal interns or externs are unpaid volunteers who are working either for academic credit or experience. The internships rotate based on the school calendar - Fall, Spring and Summer.
Interns are given a variety of assignments in the various divisions of the United States Attorney’s Office. They include researching legal issues, drafting responses to discovery, assisting in trial preparation and drafting appellate briefs. Additionally, interns are able to observe witness interviews, depositions, pretrial hearings, pretrial conferences, criminal and civil trials and sentencing hearings. Interns may also have the opportunity to visit some of the federal agencies that the United States Attorney’s Office represents.
All interns must work a minimum of 8 hours per week and a minimum of 110 hours per semester. Students from the University of Memphis Law School and the University of Mississippi Law School should apply for the internship through their law school internship programs. Students from other law schools who wish to participate in the internship program should send their resume to:
