TEXARKANA, TX -- United States Attorney John L. Ratcliffe announced today that two men were sentenced, and a third pleaded guilty, on charges of assault on an inmate stemming from a fight in the Federal Correctional Institution in Texarkana, Texas. 

            JUAN REYES-JASSO, 31, of Laredo, Texas, and CLIFFTON TERAN, 21, of Houston, each currently incarcerated in federal prison, were sentenced today by United States District Judge David Folsom in Texarkana.

            Reyes-Jasso received a sentence of 48 months in federal prison.  Teran received a sentence of 21 months in federal prison.  The prison terms will begin following completion of the current prison terms.

            FRANCISCO VERA, 41, pleaded guilty to participating in the assault on another inmate before Judge Folsom.  He faces a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison.  A sentencing date has not been set.

            According to information presented in court, Reyes-Jasso, Vera, and Teran assaulted a fellow inmate by striking him with their hands, arms, legs, and feet.  The inmate suffered injuries including broken bones in his face, cuts, bruises, and lacerations.  The injuries required hospitalization.

            This case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Alan Jackson.
