(BEAUMONT, TX)               United States Attorney Rebecca A. Gregory announced today that a 37 year-old Richmond, Virginia man has been sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for accepting bribes in the Eastern District of Texas.

ROBERT AYALA, who had pleaded guilty in February, was sentenced today during an appearance before United States District Judge Ron Clark.

According to information presented in court, Ayala, who had been employed as a correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Complex in Beaumont, received a Western Union Money Gram in the amount of $2500.00 in return for providing an inmate tobacco and a cellular telephone.  The Federal Bureau of Prisons has prohibited tobacco since 2005, and both tobacco and the cellular telephone are considered as contraband items.

This case was investigated by the Office of the Inspector General, Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the United States Marshals Service.  The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Dave Henderson.
