ILLINOIS MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO
FEDERAL DRUG VIOLATIONS

(Beaumont, TX)  United States Attorney Becky Gregory announced today that a 35 year old Urbana, Illinois man has pleaded guilty to federal drug violations in the Eastern District of Texas.

            OTIS D. POWELL admitted to conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute "crack" cocaine today during an appearance before Judge Marcia Crone.

            According to information presented in Court, Powell was apprehended February 12, 2008 after he tried to evade Jefferson County Deputies, who had initiated a traffic stop after Powell's vehicle was observed speeding on IH-10.  Powell eventually stopped his vehicle and made an abortive attempt to flee on foot.  During the foot chase, Powell was seen throwing two bags into a fenced area as he ran past.  The bags, which were immediately recovered by officers, contained 610.5 grams of "crack" cocaine.

             At sentencing, Powell faces up to 40 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $2 million.  A sentencing date has not been set for Powell at this time.

            This case was investigated by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration.  The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney John Craft.
