LEWISVILLE MAN SENTENCED FOR
SELLING STOLEN GIFT CARDS ON EBAY
SHERMAN, TX – United States Attorney Rebecca A. Gregory announced today that a 22-year-old Lewisville man has been sentenced to federal prison for selling stolen gift cards on eBay in the Eastern District of Texas.
HUY NGUYEN pleaded guilty on Aug. 26, 2008, to conspiring to purchase fraudulently obtained gift cards and sell them for less than face value on the dollar on eBay and was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison today by United States District Judge Marcia Crone.
According to information presented in court, beginning on June 6, 2006 through Jan. 9, 2008, Nguyen sold gift cards valued at $173,743.18 that he knew to be obtained by fraud. Nguyen admitted that the gift cards were obtained by individuals who stole merchandise and returned it for store credit. Nguyen collected $144,143.40 from the sale of the gift cards.
This case was investigated by the United States Postal Secret Service and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Terri L. Hagan.
