PITTSBURG, TEXAS MAN GUILTY OF FEDERAL FIREARMS VIOLATIONS
MARSHALL, TX – U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced today that a 52-year-old Pittsburg, Texas man has pleaded guilty to federal firearms violations in the Eastern District of Texas.
LEO RODRIGUEZ ORNELAS pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles Everingham.
According to information presented in court, Ornelas admitted to knowingly possessing an AMT, model "Back up," 357 SIG caliber, semi-automatic pistol. He also acknowledged that he had moved from state to state with the firearm and that he knew the serial number on the firearm had been removed. A federal grand jury returned an indictment on Jan. 6, 2009, charging Ornelas with federal firearms violations.
Ornelas faces probation, a maximum of up to 5 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000.00 and forfeiture of any firearms and ammunition he may own. A sentencing date has not been set.
This case is being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Denise O. Simpson.
