PITTSBURG, TEXAS MAN SENTENCED FOR FEDERAL FIREARMS VIOLATIONS
MARSHALL, Texas – U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced today that a 52-year-old Pittsburg, Texas man has been sentenced for federal firearms violations in the Eastern District of Texas.
LEO RODRIGUEZ ORNELAS pleaded guilty on Jan. 5, 2010, to possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number and was sentenced to three years probation today by U.S. District Judge T. John Ward. Ornelas was also ordered to forfeit his gun and ammunition and was fined $5,000.
According to information presented in court, Ornelas admitted to knowingly possessing an AMT, model "Back up," 357 SIG caliber, semi-automatic pistol. He also acknowledged that the gun had moved from state to state and that he knew the serial number on the firearm had been removed. A federal grand jury returned an indictment on Jan. 6, 2009, charging Ornelas with federal firearms violations.
This case was investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Camp County Sheriff's Office and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Denise O. Simpson.
