TYLER, Texas – U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced today that a 41-year-old Overton, Texas man has been sentenced to federal prison for firearms violations in the Eastern District of Texas.

GARY DON MUMPHREY pleaded guilty on Sep. 8, 2009, to possessing a firearm during a drug trafficking crime and was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison today by U.S. District Judge Leonard E. Davis.  Mumphrey was also ordered to surrender all interest in his firearms and all associated ammunition.

According to information presented in court, in September 2008, Mumphrey was found to be in possession of a firearm in Overton, Texas, during a drug trafficking crime.  He was indicted by a federal grand jury on Apr. 8, 2009 and charged with federal firearms violations.
This conviction is yet another important outcome from Project Safe Neighborhoods, a national priority of the United States Department of Justice. PSN is designed as a partnership between federal and local law enforcement to reduce violent crime and gun-related crime through the vigorous enforcement of the criminal provisions of the federal firearms laws.
