HOUSTON, TEXAS MAN SENTENCED FOR ESCAPING FROM FEDERAL PRISON
(BEAUMONT, TX) United States Attorney Rebecca A. Gregory announced today that a Houston, Texas man was sentenced today for charges of escaping from a federal prison in the Eastern District of Texas.
BRIAN KEITH BABIN, 44, who had pleaded guilty last month to escaping from the Beaumont Federal Prison Complex was sentenced today during an appearance before United States District Judge Marcia Crone.
According to information presented in Court, Babin was apprehended by Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputies on January 11, 2008, the same evening he escaped from the minimum security Federal Prison Camp located at the Federal Prison Complex in Beaumont. On the ruse that he had been given a "pass," Babin convinced an individual to travel to the prison camp to pick him up. An alert Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy, on patrol near the prison complex, stopped a vehicle being driven in a suspicious manner. He discovered Babin to be the passenger. Babin was returned to the prison complex by federal authorities. Babin was serving a sentence following his 1993 conviction in a federal court in Houston for drug conspiracy charges.
Babin was sentenced to a three month term of imprisonment, to be followed by a three year period of supervised release. This case was investigated by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Randall Fluke.
