SMALL BUSINESS OWNER SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR MAKING FALSE STATEMENT ON TAX RETURNS
(HOUSTON) - Gladys Nell Bishop, president of Quality Trucking Inc., has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for making false statements on her corporate tax returns for the years 2000, 2001 and 2002, United States Attorney Tim Johnson announced today. Quality Trucking is located on the 8300 block of Miller Road #2 in Houston. Bishop was convicted of three counts of making false statements on her corporate tax returns by a jury’s verdict in July 2009.
At trial, the United States proved that Bishop set up an accounting system at the company and maintained checking accounts at two different banks but only reported checks deposited into one of the checking accounts to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The total unreported income for all three years was in excess of $500,000.
At today’s sentencing hearing, United States District Judge David Hittner imposed the prison term and further ordered Bishop to pay $584,688 in restitution to the IRS and to serve a one-year-term of supervised release.
Bishop has been permitted to remain free on bond pending the issuance of an order to voluntarily surrender to a Bureau of Prisons facility to be designated in the near future.
This investigation has been conducted by the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation Division and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Cedric L. Joubert.
