2008 - June 25 - SALT LAKE CITY - A federal grand jury returned an indictment this afternoon charging  Patrick Merrill Brody and David Eugene Ross II with conspiring to commit tax fraud from 1998-2002, conspiring to evade Patrick Brody’s income taxes for 1999-2001, and money laundering.

2008 - May 29 - SALT LAKE CITY - Eusebio Aguilera-Meza, age 43, of West Jordan, convicted of federal money laundering charges in December following a two-week trial, will serve 276 months in federal prison.

2008 - February 7 -  SALT LAKE CITY – Two indictments unsealed today in Salt Lake City charge a Lindon, Utah, company and its human resource director with harboring illegal aliens and encouraging or inducing workers to stay in the United States illegally

2008 - March 17 -  SALT LAKE CITY – Dennis T. Wynn, 53, of Salt Lake City, who pleaded guilty in November to mail fraud in connection with a scheme to defraud investors in a business he operated, will serve 60 months in federal prison. U.S. District Judge Dale A. Kimball, who issued the sentence today, also ordered Wynn to pay $15,202,257.68 in restitution, although that figure may be adjusted slightly when a final figure is calculated.

2008 - March 13 -  SALT LAKE CITY – Three executives of a payroll servicing company, charged with conspiracy, mail fraud, and willful failure to pay over tax money in a 45-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury last June, have reached plea agreements with federal prosecutors.

2008 - March 6 -  SALT LAKE CITY – Ricky Ray Crespin, age 25, an admitted Ogden Trece gang member, will serve a 10-year federal prison sentence after a jury convicted him of possessing a firearm following a felony conviction. During a Wednesday afternoon hearing, U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell sentenced Crespin to the maximum sentence possible after considering his violent criminal history and his use of the firearm in connection with a shooting.

2008 - March 5 -  SALT LAKE CITY – A federal grand jury returned an indictment today charging Bryan David Mitchell, age 54, and Wanda Eileen Barzee, age 62, with interstate kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor in relation to Elizabeth Smart’s abduction in June 2002.

2008 - March 4 -  SALT LAKE CITY – Terry Brent Thompson, age 47, of Beaver, who admitted he had more than 600 images of prepubescent minors engaged in sexual conduct on his computer, will serve 10 years in federal prison. U.S. District Judge Ted Stewart issued the sentence Tuesday.

2008 - April 10 - SALT LAKE CITY A former eligibility specialist for the Utah Department of Workforce Services and three other individuals are in custody today facing federal identity theft charges in complaints unsealed in U.S. District Court Thursday morning.  The federal charges allege the former Workforce Services employee had access to the DWS customer database and used the information to steal the identity of some of the individuals in the database.

2008 - April 10 - SALT LAKE CITYDavid Roger Hemmert, a resident of Provo, owner of Northwind Roofing Company, has been charged in an indictment returned Wednesday afternoon by a federal grand jury with two counts of tax evasion.  The indictment alleges he owes the federal government approximately $100,000 for calendar year 2001 taxes and $100,000 for calendar year 2002 taxes.

2007 - June 28    SALT LAKE CITY --  A federal grand jury returned a 45-count indictment Thursday morning charging three executives of a payroll servicing company, with conspiracy, mail fraud, and willful failure to pay over tax monies.

2007 - June 20    SALT LAKE CITY --  Six individuals, who law enforcement authorities believe are responsible for allegedly distributing more than 100,000 MDMA (ecstasy) pills in the Salt Lake City area over the past six years, have been charged in five federal indictments.  The indictments were returned over the last four months and include one unsealed Wednesday and two unsealed Tuesday.

2007 - July 25    SALT LAKE CITY --  A federal grand jury returned a five-count indictment Wednesday afternoon charging Frances M. Flood and Susie Strohm, former corporate officers at ClearOne Communications, Inc., with conspiracy, making false statements to an accountant and securities fraud.

2007 - July 10    SALT LAKE CITY --  WASHINGTON— The Department of Justice today announced a settlement agreement under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with Utah College of Massage Therapy (UCMT) that will require the college to provide sign language interpreters and other auxiliary aids to students who need them as required by the ADA.

2007 - July 9    SALT LAKE CITY --  WASHINGTON— Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (Kennecott), the second largest copper producer in the United States, has agreed to implement a comprehensive cleanup of groundwater contamination from past mining operations related to the Bingham Canyon Mine located southwest of Salt Lake City, the Justice Department and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today.

2007 - August 29   SALT LAKE CITY – A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City returned two indictments Wednesday morning as a part of continuing efforts by the Utah Identity Theft Task Force and its partners to target identity theft crime in Utah. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year.

2007 - August 14    WASHINGTON – Shaun A. Walker of Mill Point, W.Va., and Eric Egbert of Salt Lake City, Utah, were sentenced yesterday in federal court in Salt Lake City for their
convictions on federal hate crime charges. Walker was sentenced to 87 months imprisonment, and Egbert was sentenced to 42 months imprisonment. After release from prison, each defendant will be on federal supervised release for three years. Walker is a former leader of the National Alliance, a West Virginia-based national white-separatist group; Egbert was also a member of the group.

2007 - August 6    SALT LAKE CITY --  Federal prosecutors in Utah continue to use an armed career sentencing enhancement to put violent Utah criminals in prison for sentences ranging from a minimum of 15 years up to life. Defendants with three or more violent felony or drug trafficking convictions, who are found in possession of a firearm, are being prosecuted as armed career criminals as a part of a Utah Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative called Operation Predator.

2007 - August 1    SALT LAKE CITY --  A federal grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday afternoon charging Rosemary Kappes, former executive director of the Housing Authority of Salt Lake City, with several violations of federal law in connection with allegations that she maintained her former husband on her health insurance policy for approximately eight years after their divorce without notifying the Housing Authority or the agency’s insurance carrier. Under the policy, a divorce would have automatically terminated an ex-spouse’s coverage.

2007 - September 12   SALT LAKE CITY – A 50-count federal grand jury indictment unsealed today charges Michaele Muree Meier, 32, a former resident of Herriman currently living in California, and four other individuals associated with her and Small Wonders Development Center of Herriman with mail, wire, and bank fraud; health care fraud; and aggravated identity theft.

2007 - October 25 -  SALT LAKE CITY – A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City returned a three-count indictment charging a Utah man with bank fraud, computer fraud, and aggravated identity theft in connection with an alleged scheme to obtain money from his fiance’s credit union account, the Justice Department announced today.

2007 - October 11   SALT LAKE CITY – The U.S. Attorney’s Office has obtained a judgment in a federal lawsuit seeking to recover costs and penalties from a military contractor who sold faulty F-16 aircraft seals to the Department of Defense.  The nearly $900,000 judgment was entered in federal court on September 25, 2007.

2007 - November 1 -  SALT LAKE CITY – Hikiau, Inc., a Utah corporation based in Orem that has done construction work on state and federally funded highway projects, and two Orem residents, Gerald Peterson, age 71, and Max Paul Peterson, age 42, have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges alleging they made false statements and representations with respect to the character and quality of work performed and materials furnished in connection with the construction of highways and related projects around the state. The five-count indictment was returned Wednesday afternoon.
