Former Henrico Sheriff's Deputy Pleads Guilty to Receiving Child Pornography

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 16, 2012

(Richmond, Va.) – John Harlan Mullins, age 53, of Henrico County, Va., pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court to receipt of child pornography.  Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; and Ken Cuccinelli, Attorney General of Virginia, made the announcement after the plea was accepted by United States District Court Judge Henry E. Hudson.  The sentencing of the defendant is scheduled for June 29, 2012.

According to court documents, Mullins, a former Henrico County Sheriff's Deputy, was detected by U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents after he accessed dozens of child pornography images from a child pornography website.  Based on this and other corroborating information, agents executed a search warrant at Mullins' residence, where they seized several computers and computer media. A subsequent forensic examination of the equipment revealed hundreds of child pornography images stored on the computer that the defendant had accessed after visiting child pornography websites.  The images portrayed prepubescent children being sexually abused.  Many of the children were identified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, based in Alexandria, VA, as past victims identified in previous law enforcement investigations.

This case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.  Gene Fishel, Special Assistant United States Attorney and Senior Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.
