Roanoke Area Reentry Summit a Success

On Tuesday, November 12, 2013, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia, along with Virginia Cares and US Probation and Parole, hosted the Roanoke Area Reentry Summit.

Over 100 people attended a day full of discussion, inspiration and networking to ensure a more positive transition from prison to home for ex-offenders, their families and their communities.

The day was filled with discussions on topics ranging from the financial obligations of recently released offenders to what types of programs jails and prisons are offering to inmates prior to release. The summit also featured a viewing of “The Pull of Gravity,” a documentary about reentry directed by El Sawyer, an ex-offender who developed a passion for film while incarcerated.

The Roanoke Area Reentry Summit was the first sentence in what will be an ongoing dialogue about the ways we can improve the transition home for ex-offenders coming out of our jails and prisons.
