MT. AIRY RESIDENTS SENTENCED FOR CARROLL COUNTY BURGLARY AND SHOOTING
United States Attorney Julia C. Dudley announced today that Mt. Airy, North Carolina residents Christopher Ryan Music, age 21, James Russell Music, age 20, William Lloyd Music, age 24, and Corey Keith Smith were sentenced on June 2, 2009, in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Abingdon.
On August 26, 2008, the defendants burglarized a home in Carroll County, Virginia, after burglarizing three homes in Patrick County. The defendants stole numerous items, including firearms. During the Carroll County, Virginia, burglary, the occupant of the residence returned home in his vehicle. Corey Keith Music told William Lloyd Music to “cap him.” William Lloyd Music fired several shots at the resident’s vehicle. Fortunately, the resident was not injured. The defendants then were involved in a high speed chase with law enforcement. Eventually, three of the defendants, James Russell Music, William Lloyd Music, and Corey Keith Smith abandoned their vehicle on Interstate 77 and fled into the woods. These defendants were apprehended several hours later. Christopher Ryan Music remained in the vehicle and was arrested.
The defendants pled guilty in March to the charges that led to their sentencing. Christopher Ryan Music and James Russell Music pled guilty to possession of stolen firearms and conspiracy to possess stolen firearms. Christopher was sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 63 months. James was sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 87 months. William Lloyd Music pled guilty to discharging a firearm during a crime of violence and was sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 188 months. Corey Keith Smith pled guilty to possession of stolen firearms, conspiracy to possess stolen firearms and possessing firearms after having been convicted of a felony. He was sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 188 months. The defendants were ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $2,553.67 and were ordered to serve a three year term of supervised release upon their release from imprisonment.
The investigation of this case was conducted by the Carroll County Sheriff’s’s Office, Patrick County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Randy Ramseyer prosecuted the case for the United States.
