CANADIAN MAN INDICTED IN DRUG CASE

The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont, stated that Alexander George, 20, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Rutland, Vermont and charged with possessing with intent to distribute marijuana. George, a Canadian citizen, made an initial appearance in the United States District Court for the District of Vermont on November 13, 2007 and was ordered detained pending resolution of the case.

According to court records, on November 9, 2007, George was stopped at a United States Border Patrol checkpoint on I-91 southbound in Hartford, Vermont and found to have approximately 93 pounds of marijuana in the cargo area of his vehicle.

If convicted, George faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The actual sentence, in the event of a conviction, will be determined in accordance with the federal Sentencing Guidelines. The United States Attorney emphasized that the charge contained in the indictment is an accusation only and the defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The United States Attorney commended the United States Border Patrol, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Drug Enforcement Agency for their hard work on this matter. The prosecutor is Assistant United States Attorney Timothy C. Doherty, Jr. The defendant is represented by Attorney Robert A. Fellrath.
