WEST SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS MAN ARRAIGNED ON DRUG CHARGES

The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont stated that William Goldenberg, 29, of West Springfield, Massachusetts pleaded not guilty on January 29, 2008 in United States District Court to an indictment charging him with conspiracy to distribute more than 100 kilograms of marijuana.

The indictment charges that between 2003 and 2006, Goldenberg conspired with others to distribute more than 500 kilograms of marijuana, a controlled substance, in violation of 21 U.S.C. §§ 846. If he is convicted, Goldenberg faces a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of five years, a fine of $2,000,000, and a term of supervised release of at least four years. The charges contained in the indictment are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until he is proven guilty.

Thomas D. Anderson, United States Attorney, commended the efforts of the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The defendant is represented by Robert A. Fellrath, Office of the Federal Public Defender. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney, Nancy J. Creswell.
