Opportunities for Lawyers
Assistant United States Attorneys are among the best and brightest lawyers in the nation. Candidates who meet the high standards of the office are assigned to work in one of two areas: Criminal or Civil. A committee of several Assistant United States Attorneys and the United States Attorney do the attorney hiring. When hired, attorneys must make a three-year commitment to the office. The average tenure of our attorneys is much longer, so openings are infrequent and highly competitive. Since knowing when vacancies will occur is difficult, interested, qualified applicants should send their applications in at any time. When a hiring round opens all applications on file will be considered. If you remain interested, please update your application every six months.
While there is no "typical" Assistant United States Attorney, most attorneys who begin working in the office have at least three years of experience beyond law school, although highly qualified recent graduates with some experience in practice or as a judicial law clerk are also considered.
