LECC (Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee)

What does LECC stand for and what is it's history?

LECC stands for the Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee and, for a number of years, was a standing committee of federal, state, and local law enforcement, chaired by the U.S. Attorney. The LEC Committees were created in the early 1980's in response to the United States Attorney General's Task Force on Violent Crime's review of law enforcement effectiveness throughout the country. That review found uneven to nonexistent cooperation among different law enforcement jurisdictions, despite the crucial need for coordination. In response to the immediate concern, the Attorney General instructed every U.S. Attorney to establish a Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee. Because coordination among law enforcement is such an integral aspect of the day to day operations of the U.S. Attorney's Office in this District, the need for a standing LEC Committee is no longer imperative.
