April 4, 2012

James L. Santelle, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, announced today that Joyce Karban (Age 63) of Oconto, appeared in federal court in Green Bay and pleaded guilty to failing to pay over to the Internal Revenue Service more than $100,000 in payroll taxes.

Ms. Karban had been employed as the bookkeeper for her husband’s dental practice, Karban DDS, which is also located in Oconto. In this position, Ms. Karban was responsible for withholding employment taxes from employee wages and paying those funds over to the IRS. During the period from January 2006 through September 2009, Ms. Karban failed to do so. Ms. Karban also failed to file the required quarterly payroll tax returns with the IRS.

Based on her guilty plea, Ms. Karban faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. She is scheduled to be sentenced on July 11, 2012.

This matter was investigated by the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS and the prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew L. Jacobs.
