Making a False Statement

MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA — A 41 year old Martinsburg resident entered a plea of guilty on July 13, 2009, in United States District Court in Martinsburg before Magistrate Judge David J. Joel.

United States Attorney Sharon L. Potter announced that ANGELA C. BROWN entered a plea of guilty to one count of making a false statement for use in the determination of Supplemental Security Income benefits which addressed her false statement made on the Representative Payee Report she completed on September 1, 2005, in which she said she was the beneficiary’s “ex-wife” when in fact she was still married to him. BROWN’s false statements resulted in an overpayment during the period of July 2002 through October 2008 in the amount of $29,039.21.

BROWN, who is currently free on bond pending sentencing, faces a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Erin K. Reisenweber. The case was investigated by the United States Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General.
