United States Obtains False Claims Act
Judgment Against Wheeling Podiatrist

WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA — Acting United States Attorney Betsy C. Jividen announced that the United States obtained a Judgment in the amount of $1,471,103.57 against Wheeling podiatrist LEONARD REYNOLDS. According to Acting USA Jividen, the civil judgment resolved allegations that DR. REYNOLDS submitted false claims to the Medicare and Medicaid programs for podiatry services that were not provided or were not supported by the documentation maintained by DR. REYNOLDS’ office.

DR. REYNOLDS is a podiatrist who practices primarily in the Wheeling, West Virginia area. He also practices in the Wellsburg, West Virginia area and provides services in nursing homes throughout the region.

“Acquiring this judgment exemplifies the continued efforts of the United States to ensure that beneficiaries of federal health benefit programs receive care that complies with federal and state standards,” announced Acting USA Jividen. “The settlement also demonstrates that we are committed to protecting federal heath care funds against depletion through fraud and abuse.”

The civil investigation and litigation were handled by Assistant United States Attorney Alan G. McGonigal in conjunction with the United States Department of Health and Human Services - Office of the Inspector General and the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of the State of West Virginia.
