McMechen Resident Enters Plea to
Possession of Child Pornography

WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA - A 45 year old McMechen, West Virginia, resident entered a plea of guilty on March 1, 2010, in United States District Court in Wheeling before Judge Frederick P. Stamp, Jr.

Acting United States Attorney Betsy C. Jividen announced that MICHAEL HASKAKIS entered a plea of guilty to one count of possession of child pornography on July 19, 2009, in McMechen. HASKAKIS, who is free on bond pending sentencing, faces a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David J. Perri and was investigated by the West Virginia State Police - Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
