Three Inmates at USP Hazelton Sentenced

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA — Three inmates at USP Hazelton entered guilty pleas and were sentenced today (March 16, 2010) in United States District Court in Clarksburg by Judge Irene M. Keeley.

Acting United States Attorney Betsy C. Jividen announced that:

GERMAN GONZALEZ-MERCADE, age 26, entered a plea of guilty to a one-count Information charging him with possessing a weapon at USP Hazelton on October 26, 2008. GONZALEZ-MERCADE was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment to be served consecutive to his current sentence.

MICHAEL KNIGHT, age 27, entered a plea of guilty to a one-count Information charging him with assaulting another inmate at USP Hazelton on June 21, 2009, using a shank (homemade weapon). KNIGHT was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment to be served consecutive to his current sentence.

JOSE MANUEL RAYGOZA-ARRELLANO, age 27, entered a plea of guilty to a one-count Information charging him with unlawfully possessing a shank on February 27, 2009. RAYGOZA-ARRELLANO was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment to be served consecutive to his current sentence.

The cases were prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David E. Godwin. The cases were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Investigative Services at USP Hazelton.
