Hedgesville Resident Sentenced on Tax Charge

MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA — A 66 year old Hedgesville, West Virginia, resident was sentenced on October 26, 2010, in United States District Court in Martinsburg by Chief Judge John Preston Bailey.

United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, announced that: ROBERT CHARLES HARBAUGH was sentenced to three years probation and a fine of $15,000. HARBAUGH entered a plea of guilty on April 15, 2010, to one count of tax evasion for tax year 2006. The charge states that from January 1, 2006, through April 15, 2007, HARBAUGH attempted to evade a large part of income tax due and owing by him in an amount up to $214,752, by disguising his income from his business as expenses on the business’s accounting records, then depositing the money into his personal bank account and significantly under-reporting his income for that tax year to the IRS.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert H. McWilliams, Jr. and was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Division.
