Wheeling Resident Indicted on Embezzlement Charge

WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA — A 42 year old Wheeling, West Virginia, resident was named in an Indictment returned today (February 1, 2011) by a Federal Grand Jury sitting in Wheeling, West Virginia.

United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, announced that JEFFREY HORNICK was named in a one-count Indictment charging him with embezzlement of public monies. The Indictment alleges that HORNICK embezzled money from the Social Security Administration through Social Security widow benefits made to his deceased mother, to which he was not entitled, in the approximate value of $32,573.00 from February 2006 continuing through July 2009.

If convicted, HORNICK faces a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.

The case will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Randolph J. Bernard. The case was investigated by Social Security Administration – Office of Inspector General.

It should be noted that the charges contained in the Indictment are merely accusations and not evidence of guilt, and that each defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
