SUMMARY OF ANTITRUST ENFORCEMENT ACTIONS
FOR PUBLIC RELEASE
FOR MONDAY, MAR. 8, 1993 THROUGH FRIDAY, MAR. 12, 1993

3/10/93 U.S. v. Conneaut Industries. Inc. and John P. Santos
Criminal No.: CR-93-16 (E.D. Ky.)

Two-count indictment was filed in U.S. District Court in Covington, Kentucky, charging Conneaut Industries, Inc. of West Greenwich, Rhode Island, and its vice president and general manager, John P. Santos, with fixing prices, in violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Act, of packaged fiberglass yarn, which is an industrial yarn used to insulate electrical wire. Conneaut and Santos also were charged with violating the witness tampering statute, 18 U.S.C. § 1512(b>(2)(B), by persuading a Conneaut employee to alter, destroy, mutilate, or conceal certain documents in order to prevent the use of those documents in official proceedings before the grand jury.

3/12/93 Justice Consents to Proposed Modification of Lumber Decree

The Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, filed a stipulation in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana which, if approved by the court, would modify the Judgment in U.S. v. Southern Pine Ass'n. et al., Civil Action No. 275 (E.D. La. 1940). Southern Pine Inspection Bureau ("SPIB") filed a motion to modify the Judgment in this case. SPIB was created, inter alia by the Southern Pine Ass'n and its members, as a separate entity to perform lumber grading and standards activities. In 1969, the Judgment was amended to allow SPIB to incorporate in Louisiana as a non-profit corporation. The Department, in a stipulation also filed with the Court, has consented to modification of the Judgment, but has reserved the right to withdraw its consent for at least seventy (70) days after publication of the Federal Register Notice. In its papers, the Department set forth its reasons why modification of the Judgment would serve the public interest.

Copies of legal filings are available from the Legal Procedure Unit, Antitrust Division, Room 3233, Telephone No.: 514-2481.
