Nominee to the United States Court of Appeals for the
Fourth Circuit
- Justice G. Steven Agee is an experienced attorney, dedicated
public servant, and respected judge, who is admired for his
intelligence, fairness, integrity, and temperament.
- Justice Agee has served as a Justice on the Supreme Court of
Virginia since 2003.
- As a Justice on the Supreme Court, Justice Agee serves on
the highest court in the Commonwealth of Virginia, deciding
complex cases involving criminal and civil law.
- In 2003, Justice Agee was elected to the Supreme Court of
Virginia by a bipartisan voice vote by both chambers of the
Virginia General Assembly.
- From 2001 to 2003, Justice Agee was a judge on the Court of
Appeals of Virginia.
- As a judge on the Court of Appeals, Justice Agee presided
over appellate cases including matters of family, criminal,
civil, and administrative law.
- In 2000, the Virginia General Assembly elected Justice Agee
to the Court of Appeals by a bipartisan voice vote.
- For more than 20 years prior to his service as a judge, Justice
Agee worked in private practice on a wide range of legal issues
involving state and Federal law.
- Justice Agee was a named shareholder in the firm of Osterhoudt,
Ferguson, Natt, Aheron, and Agee from 1980 to 2001.
- His diverse private practice included civil litigation and
commercial transactions, with a particular focus on bankruptcy,
trusts and estates, and commercial acquisitions. He also
represented clients in criminal matters and in other areas
of the law.
- Justice Agee has shown a strong and consistent commitment to
public service.
- Justice Agee served in the Army JAG Reserves from 1986 to
1997, attaining the rank of Major.
- From 1982 to 1994, Justice Agee distinguished himself as
an elected Delegate to the Virginia General Assembly. Justice
Agee represented the City of Salem and parts of Roanoke and
Montgomery Counties.
- Justice Agee possesses an impressive academic background.
- Justice Agee attended New York University School of Law
on partial scholarship and received an LL.M. (Master of Laws)
degree in Taxation in 1978.
- Justice Agee received his J.D. degree from the University
of Virginia School of Law in 1977.
- He graduated from Bridgewater College with a B.A. in 1974.
- Justice Agee is active in his local community and has shown
a strong commitment to community service.
- Before joining the bench, he served on the Federal court-appointed
defense counsel list for the Western District of Virginia
for over 20 years.
- He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Bradley
Free Clinic in Roanoke, Virginia, which provides free medical,
dental, and pharmacy services to the working uninsured, temporarily
unemployed, and their family members. He is also a member
of the Salem Rotary Club.
- Before joining the bench, he volunteered for the Roanoke
Bar Association's Legal Aid Assistance Program, which helped
needy individuals with processing bankruptcies and no-fault
divorces.
