Shalom D. Stone
Nominee to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit
- Shalom David Stone is a well-respected attorney with impeccable credentials who has litigated in state and federal trial and appellate courts in a wide variety of criminal and civil cases.
- Mr. Stone has been nominated to the Third Circuit, which hears appeals from the federal district courts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and the Virgin Islands. The Senate should give Mr. Stone a fair up-or-down vote and promptly confirm him to the federal bench.
- The seat to which Mr. Stone is nominated is considered a "judicial emergency" by the Judicial Conference of the United States.
- President Bush nominated Mr. Stone on July 17, 2007 and he has yet to receive a hearing.
- The ABA has rated Mr. Stone Qualified by a substantial majority and Well Qualified by a minority to serve on the Third Circuit.
- An October 15, 2007 article in the New Jersey Lawyer magazine stated that "the known obstacles to Stone's nomination apparently have nothing to do with him or his qualifications."
- Mr. Stone has a distinguished record as a practicing attorney, at both the trial and appellate levels.
- Since 2000, Mr. Stone has been a partner in the highly regarded Newark, New Jersey law firm of Walder, Hayden & Brogan, representing clients ranging from the Discovery Channel and Film Garden Entertainment to individual criminal defendants. Prior to his elevation to partner, Mr. Stone honed his craft as an associate in the firm. Before joining Walder, Hayden & Brogan, Mr. Stone practiced as an associate in another well-respected New Jersey law firm, Sills, Cummis, Tichman, Epstein & Gross.
- Mr. Stone has appeared frequently in court, briefing and arguing appeals and motions in complex litigation. He has tried cases in both federal and state court.
- Mr. Stone has strong academic credentials and has made significant contributions to prominent local and national professional organizations.
- He graduated from New York University School of Law in 1987. He graduated magna cum laude from Yeshiva College with a B.A. in 1984.
- He has published articles in the New Jersey Lawyer, the Insurance Litigation Report, and has authored a chapter for the American Bar Association's periodical entitled "The Scope of Federal Discovery in the Federal Courts."
- Mr. Stone's work with legal organizations, such as serving as Chair of the Federal Practice and Procedure Section for the New Jersey State Bar Association, and as a member of the Lawyers' Advisory Committee for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, the American Bar Association, the Association of the Federal Bar of the State of New Jersey, the Federal Bar Association, and the Federalist Society, demonstrates his dedication to active involvement in the legal community.
