            UNITED STATES TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE ON
           CLEAN WATER SETTLEMENT WITH JEFFERSON COUNTY


     BIRMINGHAM, AL -- Federal environmental enforcement officials will
hold a news conference Thursday, December 19, at 10:30 a.m., in the Robert
S. Vance Court House, to discuss the United States' Clean Water Act
settlement with Jefferson County. 
     
     Topics to be addressed include, the nature and significance of the
violations, the sewer rehabilitation project, the supplemental
environmental projects the county will perform, and the role of the
citizenry.
