PHONY INSPECTION SCHEME FOR VIOLATIONS OF DISABILITIES LAW TO BE
DESCRIBED AT JUSTICE-TREASURY NEWS CONFERENCE
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Officials from the Departments of
Justice and Treasury will hold a news conference Friday to call
public attention to a consumer fraud in which individuals were
induced to pay up to $10,000 each to buy so-called "inspector's
licenses" to inspect business premises for violations of the
Americans with Disabilities Act. Other individuals were sold
chemicals that were fraudulently represented as preventing
wheelchairs from skidding.
Associate Attorney General John Schmidt, U.S. Attorney
Charles Wilson, and officials from the U.S. Customs Service and
Postal Inspection Service will detail plans to distribute
restitution payments to individuals who bought the so-called
"licenses" and products.
