     STATEMENT BY ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL DEVAL L. PATRICK
              ON THE CITADEL DECISION TO ADMIT WOMEN


     WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Citadel today decided to accept
qualified female applicants into the Corps of Cadets.  Deval L.
Patrick, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights issued the
following statement:

     "We are pleased and proud that the leadership of The Citadel
has responded not only to its legal duty but to its moral duty as
well.

     We will work school officials to ensure that the policy is
carried out in the most appropriate manner."
